Here we'll be introducing three new actions within the game. The first one is when you pick up a mushroom, you'll turn into Giant Mario, becoming as big as the screen. For a set time you'll be invincible, limited to just walking, yet able to topple enemies as well as break blocks to your heart's content. There are two other new actions, which seem to be best enjoyed employing a high level of strategy.

(Right arrow) You can kick the walls to jump up higher and higher. If you can keep going, it looks like you can reach some places that are quite up there.

New Action 3: Hanging

(Left arrow) You can also hang from cliffs. Since you're not able to jump along these narrow paths, you'll have to avoid the bullet bills while hanging...

New Super Mario Brothers Magazine Scans (Fire Mario, invincibility)

Fire Mario
If you've become Super Mario, fire flowers will appear from question blocks and elsewhere. If you pick one up, you'll transform into Fire Mario, who can shoot fireballs.

Check!
Get familiar with transforming from normal Mario!

Going to Fire Mario from Super Mario is no different than the original Super Mario Brothers, as you'll instantly transform in here as well. If you receive any damage, you'll go back to Super Mario form.

(Top left caption)
Since the fire flower differs from the super mushroom by not moving, pick them up as you'd like.

(Top center caption)
Mario's transformed into Fire Mario, with a white cap and red overalls. From here, he attacks with fireballs.

(Lower left caption)
(Defeating enemies with fireballs!)
The fireballs are effective against most enemies that aren't covered by a helmet of some sort. Jumping down diagonally, the fireball should hit the part of the floor in front of you right before landing. If you receive any damage from an enemy, you'll go back to Super Mario form.

Invincible Mario
If you pick up a star, you'll become invincible for a limited time. During this time, you can progress forward as much as you'd like. However, since you'll die if you fall into a hole or pit, you better not rush too much!

(Bottom Center caption)
The star will move forward to the right on a bigger and bigger trajectory. You'll have to be a good catch!

(Bottom right caption)
A giant fish with spikes growing out it leaps out from the sea. If you're invincible Mario, you'll be able to easily do away with him. Defeat as many enemies as you'd like until you run out of time!

Mario's magnificent transformations - The NEW compilation.

Shell Mario

Defeat the enemies just by rolling!
By picking up the shell-like item, you can transform into Shell Mario. Like Fire Mario, you can perform his usual movements, which the addition of those from the transformation.

(Upper left caption)
That's the item you'll need in order to transform into Shell Mario. Even though it looks like just a normal shell, sure enough...

(Upper center caption)
...you'll transform into Shell Mario. While it looks like he's doing nothing but wearing that shell, we can't say that's all that happens.

(Upper right caption)
If you've pulled into the shell and ram into enemies, you can send them flying. If you go down a slope in your shell, you can slide long distances, taking out a bunch of enemies at once.

(Note: This translation is just for the Mini Mario portion of this page scan, broken up for easier reading.)

Mini Mario
Appearing for the first time is the tiny mushroom. If you pick this up, it'll have the opposite effect as becoming Super Mario. You'll turn even smaller than normal Mario! What kind of use could this be?

(Center caption)
The mini mushroom falls from above! If you take it...

(Center right caption)
Mario got this small. You would think he's quite weak, however...

CHECK! What's this switch?
This switch looks like the one from Super Mario World on the Super Famicom, where touching it would change blocks and coins. Is that what will happen...?

Running on top of the water!
If you become Mini Mario, you can take advantage of being so light by running on top of the water's surface. Maybe you can also get into tight areas that normal Mario couldn't enter? What about if you can't defeat enemies that normal Mario could? This game is still full of mysteries!

CHECK! Using touch items!
By touching the item on the touch screen, it looks like you'll be able to time the use of items you own to your liking.

New Super Mario Brothers

Giant Mario
On the subject of the super powerful Giant Mario, it's clear that Mario transforms when picking up the giant mushroom. It's already been reported that he's invincible while transformed into a giant, even able to destroy brick blocks while progressing. However, this time, we've obtained screens that show he can completely knock pipes from off their base. Being able to alter the topography was beyond our expectations of Giant Mario's destructive power! We wonder if the background music will change during the transformation?

Check!
What's this gauge...?
A gauge is displayed on the upper portion of the screen while transformed into Giant Mario. From the start it's white in color, appearing to be gradually charge from left side. We don't think it would act as a time limit display. If the gauge's right side were to completely fill with green, what do you think might happen?

(Upper left caption)
Here's the mushroom Mario needs in order to turn into Giant Mario. It's obviously bigger than the Super Mushroom. If Mario takes it...

(Lower left caption)
The upper portion of the screen shows Mario obtaining his giant transformation! What the heck is Mario's jumping ability like in this form?...lets hurry up and take control!

(Center caption)
He can even knock down pipes!!
Just by walking he can snap pipes like branches. While he's not only invincible as if he's got a star, the kind of power he has is on a different level. The right edge of the screen has become stuffed with pipes, so could Mario (more easily) progress by pounding them all out of the way?

Mario Trivia - How do you increase Mario's remaining lives?
Ways to increase Mario's remaining lives include picking up hidden 1-Ups, collecting 100 coins and more. Definitely remember this.

Picking Up 1UP Mushrooms
Many 1UP mushrooms have been hidden, located in places that are even harder to figure out than the super mushrooms. Besides checking all the question blocks and smashing all the bricks, they may also suddenly show up by just by jumping anywhere you can think of.

What other ways are there...?
(Right caption) By kicking a shell and defeating many enemies in succession, you can also earn 1-Ups.

Gathering 100 Coins
If you gather 100 of the coins that are suspended in the air, you'll increase your life by one, but this is like creating a mountain out of dust. In places you wouldn't think of, there are areas containing many hidden coins. Have fun investigating each nook and cranny of the levels to find them.

One after another, familiar characters appear!! Some can't be stomped, while others won't be affected by fireballs. The (previous) characters peculiarities are the same. If you're an experienced Super Mario player, do you expect to have any problems!? With New Super Mario Brothers makes it comeback to 2D action, let's introduce you to the familiar enemies. These guys have been a thorn in Mario's side since the Famicom original!

(Before) If you stomp Pata Pata...

(Top right caption)
With "wings" in his shell, Pata Pata floats in the air in fantastic style. But if you stomp on the top of his head...

(Center right caption) Now he's (regressed?) into Noko Noko, walking on the ground. By the way, a single fireball will now take him out.

(After) After having his wings taken, he's become Noko Noko.

Metto (Buzzy Beetle) and Kira (Bullet Bill) are immune to fireballs.

(Center Right caption)
With Buzzy Beetle and Bullet Bill having bodies of metal, fireballs will have no effect! Getting close to defeat them comes with risks.

Close in on the powerful hammer brothers to win!!

(Lower Right caption)
If you're Fire Mario, you'll have an easy victory. In all other cases, the hammer brothers are quite powerful. Watch out for an opening and jump in close!

Quickly defeat Jugemu (Lakitu)!

(Bottom left caption)
Lakitu will toss more and more Togezo (Spinies). You'll want to hurry up and defeat him.

An under water battle with Gesso (Blooper) and Puku Puku (Cheep Cheep)

(Center left caption)
While in the water, you can neither stomp on the enemies nor break blocks from under them.

If you touch the Pakkun Flower (Piranha Plant), you're out!

(Center left caption)
You can not stomp on the Piranha Plant. If you're not Fire Mario, all you can do is avoid him.

Reviewing how to defeat the enemies!

Here are four fundamental patterns to defeat enemies in Super Mario. Let's go over them again.

The basic of basics.

1. Stomp
Jump in order to stomp on enemies' heads. There are enemies which will go into their shells for a limited time.

2. Hit blocks from underneath
This method of attack is effective against all enemies walking on the blocks.

3. Defeat them with fireballs
If you can attack them from a distance, it's quite safe and low risk.

4. Kick a shell and defeat enemies in succession!!
If you stomp on Noko Noko and kick his shell, you can take out the other enemies on the course in a clean sweep! Your score will climb as well!
