Super Mario: Yoshi Island
Handling and Instruction Manual
Story
This is a tale from long, long ago...
A tale of Yoshi and a baby...
In the predawn darkness, a single stork flies in a great rush. Being held firmly in its bill are a pair of twins, just born today. The stork is in a rush to bring them to their mother and father!
But then, moving in at a fierce speed, a shadowy figure suddenly emerges from the clouds and collides with them!!
[Kii! Ukii~! That baby is mine~!]
Yelling out as he passes by, this guy actually managed to snatch away the baby! What the heck is he doing?! But, he managed to only take one of the twins. After the the stork was collided into, the other baby heads towards the sea, headfirst...
[You must find me the other baby~! The two of them MUST NOT make it to their Mother and Father~!!]
The other baby was lucky to have not fallen into the ocean. Instead, he landed completely safe...right on the back of a Yoshi strolling on an island.
Somehow, a hand drawn map fell down with him...
This is Yoshi's Island, the residence of the Yoshis. The usually carefree Yoshis now have a serious problem to deal with! As the Yoshis consult each other, the baby keeps pointing at something. It seems he can sense the location of his captured twin.
With that being the case, all of the Yoshis have to decided transport the baby by relaying with each other across the island. First up is the Green Yoshi. With Mario on his back, he sets off in the direction that the baby is pointing.

Before starting the game
When you clear a course, your game progress and score will automatically be saved!
After carefully inserting the cassette into the Super Famicom system, please press the power switch to on. To begin [The Story], press the start button to go to the title screen. From here, if you press the start button once more (or A/B/X/Y), the file menu will be displayed.
Choose the data file that you wish to be save to. There are three files in total.
Copy
You can create an identical data file on whichever other file you wish to use. This is useful for such things as friends wanting to use each others files.
Erase
On which ever data file you wish to erase, you can start from the beginning. Data which has been erased even once can not be recovered, so please be careful when erasing.
About the course select screen
This game has 6 worlds, with 8 courses per world. Before you enter a course, the course select screen will be displayed. Please move the hand cursor between courses and make a selection.
(Clockwise from top left)
- Courses you have already cleared will be displayed in color. You can re-challenge the same course as many times as you'd like.
- In every world, a boss enemy awaits you on course 4 and 8.
- When you wish to play in another world, bring your cursor to this section.
- [Controller Settings] You can set your preferences between the two types of egg throwing methods.
- [Score] You can look at the highest obtained score for the cleared courses (Page 13)
- If certain conditions have been met, icons will be displayed here as well. Something unknown, but fun will pop-up!
Basic Rules
If you take in damage, you'll lose the baby! Be sure to watch your star count, which acts as a protective charm to keep him safe.
If one Yoshi can safely take the baby upon his back and pass it on to the next Yoshi, that course will be clear.
However, if Yoshi is hit by an enemy and takes in damage, the baby will be separated from him. For a short while, the star charms will work to protect MArio as their power gradually wanes. Once the [Star Protection] is completely exhausted, Kamek's underlines will swoop in to take away the baby. Before that happens, Yoshi needs to get him back
(Left arrow caption)
If the number gets to zero, then...
A good technique to know
When the baby floats to a high up location, hitting him with an egg will cause him to drop back down. Also, you can rescue the baby by extending your tongue upwards.
Star
For each star you pickup within the course, your [Star Protection] will be increased by one. You can increase your star count to a maximum of 30.
Your [Star Protection] at the beginning of a course is 10.
Furthermore, if your [Star Protection] goes below 10, it will automatically regenerate after grabbing Baby Mario.
(Pictured) > Recovering back to 10
Midway Ring
Halfway through the course are rings like those pictured towards the right. If you go through the ring, you'll be able to start over nearby if you lose a life. However, if you get a game over, you'll have to start from the beginning of the course once again.
(Pink Box) When you pass through the midway ring, your [Star Protection] will increase by 10.
Basic Items
Coin
These are placed in various locations throughout the course. If you gather 100, Yoshi will receive a 1-Up.
Red Coin
A total of 20 red coins have been hidden throughout the course. These will have an affect on your score when you reach the goal. They also count as regular coins.
Eggs (You can hold up to 6)
Besides swallowing enemies to make eggs, you can obtain them by hitting certain blocks. Also, items will emerge from breaking non-green eggs.
Yellow Egg > Coin
Red Egg > 2 Stars
Bright Egg > Red Coin
Special Flower
5 of these have been placed within each course. Gather them all for a 1-Up. These will also have an effect on your score when you reach the goal.
The Goal and Scores
Getting the full 100 points is very difficult. At the beginning, it will be of benefit just to focus on clearing the course.
The Goal Roulette (Page 14) is placed at the very end of the course. If you go through it, the course is cleared and the baby will be passed to the next Yoshi, as if he's a baton.
Score Board
If you make it to the goal, the score board will be displayed, where your results in the course will be graded. The rules for getting points are explained below:
1. This is the highest score you've obtained in the course up to this point.
2. The amount of [Star Protection] you've obtained at the end goal (Maximum=30)
3. Obtained Red Coins (Maximum=20)
4. Obtained Special Flowers (10 Points Per Flower. Maximum of 50 points)
5. The Current score.
There's 100 points in all!
If you wish to check the current score while in a course, just press the start button to enter the pause screen.
Bonus Challenge
Depending on the number of Special Flowers you pick up along the course, flower marks will be added to the goal roulette. If you stop the roulette on the flower mark, you can play a bonus stage to receive special items or increase your remaining amount of Yoshis.
Lottery
By choosing just 1 (correct) card, you can obtain the item that appears. If Kamek's picture shows up, you get nothing!
Scratch
Scratch whichever 3 blocks you like. The amount of Baby Marios uncovered will reflect how many Yoshis you get.
Slots
Press a button to stop the slot drum. If you skillfully align the pictures, your Yoshi count will increase.
Card Turn
Turn over the cards to gather items. Up until Kamek pops up, you can continually select cards. If Kamek appears, you'll lose any items you've obtained. You can end the game at any point you'd like. If you're able to turn over all of the cards, something very wonderful will happen...
Card Matching
If you can turn over two cards of the identically pictured item, you'll receive it. When you're turning the cards over, you'll want to carefully remember their placement. In this game as well, you'll be rewarded for turning all the cards over.
Roulette
First, press up or down on the d-pad to decide your wager. From there, spin the wheel. The number you've bet will be calculated into the roulette wheel. The result will determine Yoshi's remaining life count. Be careful about getting an X and O, as Yoshi's remaining lives will be decreased compared to when the game was started.
All these things to do!
Within the course are all sorts of contrivances. You'll need to make good use of them in order to progress through.

Hitting these with an egg will cause stars or coins to emerge, turn items into special flowers and trigger other events.

Arrow Cloud
If you hit it with an egg, it will fly off in the direction it's currently pointing at.

You'll need to find the hidden key in order to insert it into the door and open it up. Opening the door (stand in front of it and press A) will cause the [Mini Battle Game] to begin. If you can win against your opponent enemy character, you'll either get a special item or an increase to Yoshi's remaining lives.
(You'll need a key for this door)
Air Balloon Throw (Short/Long)
Before the meter is filled, correctly enter the buttons being displayed in order, passing the air balloon to the opponent. Each time, the hot air balloon will expand slightly and whoever's holding it at the time it pops will lose. There is also a longer version of the command entry.
