Story

* This is the Fairy Forest, where Fairies reside deep within. It's said that anyone who glances at them will be brought happiness. One day, Mario arrived at the forest in search of the legendary fairies.

Accompanying him are Peach, Yoshi and Luigi...well, as you might expect, Luigi disappeared from sight. The three split up, in search of the missing Luigi.

Hey, there’s a strange engine sound up in the air. What could it be? Riding his beloved "Bulldog", Wario appears and tosses a package from the sky. "Er, Umph!"

Yikes, a bucket landed right over Mario's head! "Waaa, I can't see a single thing!"

Watching all of this is Wanda the Forest Fairy. Wanting to somehow lend Mario a hand, the small fairy lacked the power to remove the bucket. Therefore, Wanda uses her magic wand to conduct Mario, directing him towards Luigi...

1 How to use the mouse

The 'Mario & Wario' software exclusively uses the Super Famicom Mouse. The game is played by using the mouse to control Wanda the Fairy.

For a detailed instructions on the Super Famicom Mouse, please refer to the Super Famicom Mouse Instruction and Handling Booklet.

Moving the mouse...maneuver Wanda the Fairy
If the mouse is moved, Wanda the Fairy's movements will coincide with it.

Clicking the left button...use the magic wand
If you use the magical stick that Wanda the Fairy holds, you can perform the three actions listed below.
1. Change the direction of Mario and friends.
2. Place and erase blocks.
3. Hit enemies.
To use the magic wand, place the wand's point where you'd like to perform an action and click the left button.

Click the right button...pause the game
By clicking the right button, the game can be paused. Furthermore, if you move the mouse while the game is paused, the screen will match the movement, allowing sections you haven't yet seen to become visible.

2 Before Beginning The Game

Please make sure the cassette is properly inserted into the Super Famicom system. By pressing the power switch on, the title screen will appear.

CHARACTER SELECT
At the title screen, by pressing either the left or right mouse button, the character select screen will appear. At the character select screen, between Mario, Peach or Yoshi you can choose your favorite character. After placing the fairy over your character of choice, please press the left button.

Princess Peach
Since her walking speed is the slowest of the 3 characters, she would be suited for people who wish to slowly plan their route to the goal.

Mario
A balanced character, with average walking speed. For players just starting the game, we especially recommended him.

Yoshi
He's proud to have the fastest feet. A good choice for those who've become skilled at the game and wish to quickly reach the goal.

(5)

Changing the mouse speed
At the character select screen, the mouse speed (quickness of the fairy's movements) can be selected. After switching from low or high for the fairy, please click the left mouse button. However, during the game's opening period, the mouse speed will be set to low. Please change the mouse speed before deciding on your character.

LEVEL SELECT
Once you've decided on a character, the level select screen will appear. Eight locations, Levels 1 through  8 will be displayed, any of which may be selected. After moving the fairy over the level you wish to play, please click the left button. If level 8 is cleared. 9 will appear. Clear 9 to make the final stage, level 10 show up.

Re-selecting a character
The player's chosen character will walk below the sign on the player select screen. Here, by bringing the fairy to the character and clicking the left button, you're able to return to the character select screen.

(6)

3 How to play the game...
After deciding on a level from the level select screen, a demo screen will appear, continuing into the game screen. By clicking the left button, the game will begin.

Object of the game.
Once the game has started, you'll direct the walking of Mario & friends, as their heads are covered by buckets. Please skillfully control Wanda the Fairy and direct them to the goal, where Luigi awaits. Of course, throughout the level there are enemies, obstacles and various traps. If you clear them and reach the goal within the allotted time, you'll be able to advance to the next screen.

Clockwise from the top left:

(7)

Level...Level and screen currently being played.

Score...Points earned. Besides defeating enemies and collecting coins and stars, you can receive bonus points for clearing the stage within the required time.

Amount of Stars...The amount of stars acquired from the level. If you gather 4, the character's remaining lives will increase by one.

Amount of Coins...The amount of coins you've gathered to this point. If 100 are gathered, the character's remaining lives will increase by one, returning the coin amount to zero.

Time Gauge...The time limit to reach the goal. With the time and gauge decreasing, what's left when you reach the goal will go towards being added to your points as a bonus.

Remaining Lives...The character's remaining lives.

*Game Over
The character's remaining lives being reduced to zero will result in a Game Over, like the screen shown on the right. Choose continue to return to the level select screen. From the game over screen, you can restart the game. Choose end to return to the title screen.

4: Blocks * Items * Enemy Characters

Types of Blocks

Flip Flop Block
This block is surrounded by dotted lines. It will appear by using the magic wand, where after it can be walked over. Once more, by using the magic wand, it can also be erased.

Time Block
This block has a picture of a clock drawn within it's dots. Using the magic wand will make it appear, but it will disappear once enough time passes.

Cracked Block
A block that has cracked with age. Using the magic wand will cause it to break.

Balloon Block
A block made from a rubber balloon, which is always expanding and withering. While it's expanded, you can walk on top of it.

Switch Block
There are two types, red and blue. By using the magic wand, you can alternate between making all the blocks of each color appear and disappear. When the red and blue blocks are both on screen, blue is erased if red is shown and red is erased if blue is shown.

(9)

Sticky Sticky Block
A small block with a green top and red bottom. When walking on the green portion, your walking speed will slow down. By using the magic wand, you can flip the blocks over, allowing for a normal walking speed.

Coin Block
Coins have been put inside this block. Using the magic wand will allow you to get them. If you keep clicking the left button, you can get a maximum of 10 coins.

Jump Block
A block with a jumping platform fastened to it. If a character gets on top, they can leap up to a high location.

Spike Block
This block has a spike coming out of it. Please be careful, as coming into contact with the spike by touching it or having it fall on you from above will result in the loss of a life.

Elevator
It always moves up and up. If the character gets on, they'll automatically be transferred to the very top of the elevator. You're not able to get off mid-way.

(10)

Types of Items

If you take this, your character's remaining lives will increase by one.

Time Mushroom
If you take this, your time gauge will turn back a bit, extending your remaining time.

After Level 2, each screen will contain 4 stars. If you make it to the goal having collected all 4, your character's remaining lives will increase by one. No matter which order you get them in, the final star will shine.

Enemy Character Introduction

Dodorigesu Jr.
A jet black crow. Before he gets near Mario and friends, be sure to quickly knock him out.

(11)

Guriguri
A ball of flames that rotates around blocks. If you use the magic wand to shrink him, it will further reduce his speed.

Tsubon
A canon that tirelessly shoots out fireballs. You can use the magic wand to extinguish the fireballs. Furthermore, for Tsubons that are situated diagonally, the magic wand can be used to switch them to the opposite direction.

Komorin
Hanging from the walls, they're on the lookout for Mario and friends. If approached, they'll attack by scattering in 4 possible directions. You can use the magic wand to knock them out.

Unibo-

5 An introduction to each stage

Level 1 * Fairy Forest
This is the forest in which Mario and friends first stumbled into. Since each level of the map is small (divided into 1 screen), this is a good stage to get familiar with the mouse controls.

Level 2 * Yosu (Yoshi) Lake
The lake where Yoshi is rumored to have born. All along this maze are jump blocks which hinder you.

Level 3 * Kumotori (Grab the Cloud) Mountain
Kumotori Mountain is so high, it appears as if you can reach the sky’s clouds with your hand. There are rows of 'Time Blocks' to deal with by activating them one by one in a line (in order to pass).

Level 4 * Cave of Ice
A dark, freezing cave of ice. The 'Kumorin' that have settled on the cave’s ceiling will attack if approached.

(13)

Level 5 * Cave of Flames
A cave of simmering lava and boiling hot flames. Take special care when circling around and touching the blocks.

Level 6 * Bubbling Sea
The bottom of the ocean is full of switch blocks. You can utilize the timing of their appearances and disappearances as a road.

Level 7 * Balloon Bridge
Up in the air are 'Balloon Blocks' which inflate and deflate. Judge the timing of when the blocks inflate to cross over.

Level 8 * Dried Desert
In the Dried Desert, the bright red cannons (Tsubons) appear, shooting their balls of fire. Be careful not to get burned!

(14)

Level 9 * Wario's Garden
Clearing Level 8 will make a special screen appear. All of the various traps you've seen are now On Parade. This place will test your skill.

Level 10 * Wario Mansion
At last, the final level. Being Wario's Mansion, traps are to be found everywhere. Even though it's quite difficult, don't get discouraged!

*If you get a Game Over within levels 9 to 10, you'll continue from level 9-1.

6 Advice from the Fairy

Finally, here's some advice from the Fairy, Wanda. She'll show you some techniques that are useful to know.

*If getting on an elevator...
If you get on the elevator, you'll have to wait until you reach the top. However, so as not to be rushed, you can always re-consider if you should have boarded. Even while you're on the elevator, you can use the magic stick to change which direction the character's facing (towards the destination or starting point).

*How high can you leap on the jump blocks?
The leaping height for jump blocks is four spaces for large blocks and eight spaces for small blocks. They'll definitely help you out in mazes.

* Happily scoring points in out of the way places.
Besides just defeating enemies and getting to the goal, you can increase your points in out of the way places. For example, while blocks are appearing and disappearing, also touch a star with your magic wand...try out various other things, too.

* What about when you can't reach an area you'd like to visit?
Even though you can see a star, you may have no idea how to get over to it. In that case, try searching whether there are  hidden blocks. If you use your magic wand, hidden blocks will appear.

*Habits of the Kumorin you'll want to know.
If an enemy attacks, you don't have to go after them. You'd be wise to skillfully dodge them. Although you may think the Komorin will (want to continue) chasing you, if there's sufficient space behind you, they'll stop. It’s a trick allowing you to escape.
