Olimar's Disaster

My name is Captain Olimar.

On my home planet of Hocotate, I have a well-regarded reputation as an outer space navigator. At times, I would be in business transporting small scale freight. On other occasions, space resources from star to star would be hauled in my beloved spaceship, the Dolphin.

Having worked without rest for some time, I felt like I should reward myself for a short while. I made plans to go on a vacation for one. The night before launching off, my lovely wife cooked my favorite soup. A specialty of Planet Hocotate, it was full of onions and colorful red, yellow and blue "Piku Piku" (Twitching) carrots. A very delicious soup. With a full belly, I slipped into my warm bed, thinking about the vacation for one I would be enjoying from the next morning. Soon enough, I fell into a blissful, deep sleep.

The initial journey went well. With no destination in mind, the Dolphin gentilly made its way into "The Great Deep" of outer space. During the short trip, I had this amazing premonition. I set the Dolphin's controls to automatic, then stood up from them to go drink a hot cup of mushroom tea... And then! An unbelievable jolt resonated through the Dolphin's frame. For a moment, I wasn't able to make sense of what was going on. My body hit the machinery and I completely lost consciousness...

With the Dolphin in distress, I finally landed on a planet whose name and location I did not know. For the time, I was physically alright. But, my spaceship was horribly mangled, with its parts being scattered all over the planet. Even worse, this planet's atmosphere seems to contain poisonous oxygen. Fortunately, the life support equipment upon my back was not damaged. However, it only has 30 days of working battery life. If I can just find the engine, I will gain the ability to move within the Earth's atmosphere. Maybe I will be able to search for the other parts...While recovering the remaining scattered parts of my spaceship within the remaining time, I wonder if I'll be able to make it back to my home planet safely?

I've decided that until the time comes that I leave this planet, I will record the sights and experiences of each day into a journal. That inspiration come to me from two mysterious encounters. The first was a three legged object that stood up. It was of tremendous size, resembling the onions of back home. Plus, there was one other thing...there are these tiny life forms resembling the colorful Piku Piku carrots. I have called these tiny creatures...Pikmin.

About Pikmin
On this planet, Olimar will encounter 3 colors of Pikmin. Understanding the Pikmin's unique characteristics according to their differing colors is the first step to evacuating the planet.

So what are the Pikmin?
The Pikmin are mysterious life forms that Olimar encounters upon being stranded on the planet. For some reason, they seem cooperative with him. Also the Pikmin are very clever creatures. They can be thrown (Page 27), move in file (Page 28), transport objects, fight enemies and under their own judgement, act out in various ways.

Up to 100 can be on the ground.
The Pikmin will walk along behind Olimar. Up to 100 can be out. Furthermore, the 100 figure includes Pikmin buried in the Earth, at work elsewhere and ones that are "free" (Page 18).

What the Pikmin can do.
Pikmin can be thrown, moved in rows or respond to conditions around them, amongst other things. If you have many Pikmin performing the same action at once, you'll be commanding a powerful force.

Fight with the wildlife
You can attack and defeat wildlife.

Destroy gates
By beating against the gates, you can desmolish them.

Transport objects.
Fallen pellets (Page 17), defeated wildlife and more can be carried back to the onion. Space ship parts are also carried back to the spaceship.

Use Bomb Rocks
Bomb Rocks (Page 16) can be picked up by Yellow Pikmin. They can be used on wildlife and gates, both of which will receive big damage upon impact.

Remove Obstacles
Obstacles blocking your path can be removed, allowing you to pass.

Set up bridges
Bridges can be set up over rivers, etc., expanding Olimar's movement range.

The three types of Pikmin
The Pikmin are divided into 3 colors, born from matching colored 'onions'. Their color also denotes their special characteristics. Considering how to use them effectively is crucial.

Red Pikmin - Strong against heat, extraordinary fighting ability.
Blue Pikmin - Since they love the water, they can freely move through it, even while fully submerged.
Yellow Pikmin - They are able to handle bomb rocks. Yellow Pikmin can be thrown higher in the air.

! Handling Warning!
- If you throw a Pikmin holding a bomb rock next to an obstacle, they'll ignite it before returning to you.
* Ignited bomb rocks are dangerous to be in the vicinity of.

Increasing Pikmin
To increase your Pikmin count, you'll need to bring 'Pikmin Materials' to the onions. Doing so allows more Pikmin to be born. The materials consist of pellets and defeated enemies which the onions use to sprout Pikmin out of.

Pellet Grass - Beating the grass causes the flower to fall off, turning into a pellet.

Pellet - A source of nutrients for the onion to create Pikmin with. The number indicates the amount of Pikmin needed to carry it.

When having Pikmin transport pellets and defeated wildlife, they'll return to the onion of their same color. If two or three different Pikmin are transporting the same object, the Pikmin making up the largest color group will take it to their matching onion.

The growth of Pikmin
If Pikmin are buried in the ground and left undisturbed, they will suck up the essence of the land, growing from a leaf, to a bud, then a flower. Pikmin that are mature seem to move quicker, so use as many mature Pikmin as you can to transport pellets and defeat enemies.

Leaf Pikmin > Bud Pikmin > Flower Pikmin

Smaller than you finger...Olimar.
Even smaller than him...are the Pikmin.

Let's go on a search for spaceship parts

Finding himself stranded on this planet...Olimar will have to go search for parts in order to return home. Since you can cooperate with the Pikmin, now's the time to go find them.

Basic rules
The planet is divided into a number of areas. Olimar can use a single day to investigate any one of them. With time automatically progressing, he has until sundown to search before the day ends. Once Olimar obtains a certain number of ship parts, he'll recover a portion of the ship's ability and can go off to a new area.

* You can not investigate multiple areas in a single day.

Searching for the 30 ship parts
30 parts have been lost from your space ship. If you don't find them all, you won't return home to planet Hocotate. By searching throughout the various areas, see if you can find the parts.

The 30 day time limit.
Olimar's life support equipment only lasts for 30 days. If you don't discover all the parts within the 30 day limit, it's game over.

* Pikmin active with Olimar
* Free Pikmin next to the onions and spaceship (Page 28)

- Pikmin buried in the ground will be left in the area.
- Pikmin at work, those fighting and 'free' Pikmin away from Olimar do not board the onion. They'll be left to be devoured by the nocturnal wildlife.

Pikmin Q&A

Q. Why is it that Pikmin detour on their return back to the Onions?

A. While Pikmin carrying objects will attempt to quickly return to the onion, if there are nearby obstacles impeding them on the way back, they'll have to take another path or find themselves walking in place. Go ahead and open a path for them.

(Upper right caption) At stone walls, borrow the power of the Yellow Pikmin and destroy the walls with bomb rocks.

Q. The wild life is too tough for me to defeat.

A. To defeat larger wildlife, you'll need many Pikmin. If you've gathered a number of small Pikmin, you'll be able to take down even giant enemies. There are also useful methods to defeating them, such as tossing Pikmin at them from behind, or fighting with particular Pikmin colors. Make up a strategy!

Fighting techniques
If you attack wildlife at their feet, they'll move around clumsily. One tactic is to prevent the wildlife from escaping, while throwing the Pikmin at it from another angle. Also, rely on the red Pikmin for fighting, as enemies will receive a larger amount of damage.

 Q. What if I wish to increase a particular Pikmin color?

A. Pikmin tend to transport pellets and defeated wildlife to onions of their color. Make use of this habit.
* When wishing to increase Yellow Pikmin, for example, it would be good to have them be the ones to carry pellets and wild life.

Q. I've brought the Pikmin next to a pellet or defeated wildlife, however they won't transport it.
A.  Press down to move your Pikmin formation around. Pressing down doesn't simply just adjust the accompanying Pikmin's direction, but can be used to assign a duty to the entire lot of them. By pressing down and moving the Pikmin towards a pellet or fallen life form, they should begin transporting it.

Q. I can't do so much in one day.
A. By dispersing the Pikmin across tasks, you can more effectively utilize your time. For example, in the same time period 20 Pikmin can destroy a gate blocking the road, another 20 can transport pellets and spoils and 20 more can be used to battle wildlife...all this being directed at the same time! As the end of the day approaches, that's the time to go pick up Pikmin and free Pikmin from places you assigned work and left.
