TDS Land Infiltrates!
TOUCHING upon the game's production in this secret talk!
(Left profile)
Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development Producer, Takashi Tezuka
Engaged in the general development of Nintendo's representative series' such as [Super Mario Brothers], The Legend of Zelda], [Animal Crossing] and more.
"Becoming big, being able to battle."
- So with the Nintendo DS, has the touch screen been used as a form of control?
Takashi Tezuka (From here on, referred to as Tezuka): For Mario, as with previous games, he'll mainly be controlled by using the d-pad. We found it became too complicated to control him by frequently pressing the touch screen . Therefore, you'll be using it very rarely.
- What will it feel like to use the touch screen mid-stage?
Tezuka: During the times that you want use items you have in stock such as mushrooms, just a quick touch is all that's necessary.
- So the items would work like they did in Super Mario World?
Tezuka: That's about right. The game will fundamentally be played with the usual D-pad and the two buttons. That's how I wanted the game be done.
- Speaking of mushrooms, this time Mario can become quite huge! How do you feel about how picking up the (giant) mushroom seems to be a normal power up?
Tezuka: No! It is not normal (laughs). As usual, Mario will often be transforming from small to big. But with Giant Mario, I should say he's a 'special form', so we planned for those transformations to be limited in comparison.
- So we may only see him once per several stages?
Tezuka: That sounds about right.
- When he's big, will he be invincible as if he has a star?
Tezuka: That's what it will feel like. It will be like you're knocking enemies over. When you're giant, you can punch blocks to destroy them as well.
- Besides that, there's been a big change: A whole (new) portion to the game? We've heard this time there will be versus battle play.
Tezuka: In this game, using wireless communication, two people can play at the same time.
- Two can play at the same time?!
Tezuka: That's right. With simultaneous play being one of the Nintendo DS's key features, we couldn't just pass on the chance to use it. If two people play, we made it so that no one could control the scrolling. Wouldn't that be difficult to deal with? From the screen... (Continued on the next page)

5 weeks in a row!! Nintendo DS Special Edition: New Super Mario Brothers
New Item 1: Mario is a speck!? A new transformation!
Giant Mario in NSMB will tend to catch your attention without thinking about it. Regardless, we got some information about his other transformations. Check out the picture to the right. Somehow, Mario can shrink down as small as a speck. From this area, it seems there are places you can't progress to unless you've become tiny. Tiny Mario looks like fun!
(Caption) In the center of the screen, Mario's looking jumpy. There's little speaks of brown all around too. It looks like there's tiny versions of kuribo!
Tinyyy~!! Enemy kuribos are also tinyy~!!
New Item 2: Eh!? Mario vs. Luigi!?
Since this is Nintendo DS software, it's not surprising that it's using the communication feature for a battle mode as well! So Mario and Luigi will compete!?
(Caption) There's also a battle mode using the communication feature! Mario and Luigi duke it out in dedicated stages!
New Item 3: You can snatch a shell from Nokonoko?! Meet Shell Mario!
In this game's Mario, besides becoming giant or tiny, you can also perform various transformations. But, what's more, you can put Nokonoko's shell on your back! Furthermore, besides flying off in the shell as if it was kicked, you'll be able to surprise all the enemies by knocking them out yourself, with Mario in it! But with this, if you miss your target after propelling yourself forward in the shell, will you then become small!?
(Center caption) A blue Nokonoko appears before Mario, awaiting defeat. If you do a hip drop on his shell...
(Right caption) The shell's on your back! You can relax, as you're able to progress while defeating enemies!
Nokonoko Mario?

(Continuing from the previous page) ...You'll be placed from the screen according to (your) movements.
- I see. (Laughs)
Tezuka: In the case of the DS, since using the monitors (screens) makes it simple to connect your games together and communicate, you can enjoy two player mode in a way not possible until now.
- Finally, "Mario Brothers" has become like how the name implies (Laughs). With Luigi as the 2nd player, it will feel like you're playing cooperatively?
Tezuka: While we thought of creating a cooperative section, we decided to just go on to create a competitive 2-player mode.
- Will the victory be decided on one of the players reaching a goal?
Tezuka: While a goal point would be very simple, other means to compete have been created.
- What will the fundamentals of the (other) 2-player battle mode be?
Tezuka: Here's what it's looking like... We've already decided on implementing some of the battle mini games from Super Mario 64 DS, allowing 2~4 player play. We've taken the previous games and felt we've improved improved on and supplemented them.
- I see. Will there be original mini games as well?
Tezuka: Yes, there will be originals too. Imagine something like Mario Advance, which had Mario Bros mode, as well as a two player mode based on the main game.
"What's it like to fine tune the game"
-So far, things seem to be the same (as other Mario games). Will be seeing 1UP mushrooms appearing out of nowhere in the air?
Tezuka: With what's been created so far, we've put whatever we could into it, like thinking of how to take the nostalgic enemies and convert them into 3D.
- Besides (reaching) goal (points), have you already decided on anything else? Have any other changes been made at this point?
Tezuka: At this time, as when the game was in it's beginning state, we think you'll be taking the flag from the pole.
- Oh, really?! That's great! So will something also happen for getting 5000 points?
Tezuka: Compared to all of the interesting new things we've created, you seem overjoyed at something so simple..?
- Pardon me, I really was quite pleased (Laughter). While we're speaking of fans being overjoyed by the basics, I'm also thinkings about the sounds. Will you be using all new compositions?
- Tezuka: We are thinking of using the "main" Mario theme. Buutt, basically, we'd like to use both completely new music and arrangements of past compositions.
- Besides all this, is there anything you'd like to bring to our attention?
Tezuka: For the new Mario, my staff put quite a lot of energy into it as well. But, personally, I still won't be defeated by those young people. That's what I'm dealing with (Laughs). The game should be comparatively enjoyable for people who don't often play games, as well as those who will play without hesitation. It was created with the thought that the difficulty should not increase too suddenly. At the same time, Mario fans who wish ro complete the game in it's entirety will be spending quite a bit of time to do so. Even though it was built with such a wide scope, we ask our (more dedicated) fans to still anticipate a game that will meet their expectations.
