The Story of Super Mario USA:

One evening, Mario had a mysterious dream. It was of a long, long staircase, which continued upwards towards a door. With the opening of the door, a world unlike anything previously seen expanded as far as Mario's eyes could see. He could clearly hear a faint voice in his ears.

"Welcome to Subcon, the land of dreams. We're being tormented by Mamu; the entire country is under terrible spell. We've been awaiting your arrival...please, defeat Mamu, restoring Subcon to it's original form. The curse Mamu put on you in the real world has no effect in the dream world. Are you getting this so far? Please remember that Mamu is said to HATE vegetables. Please help us out!”

At the same time of hearing this voice, lightning flashed before Mario's eyes. In surprise, Mario lost his footing, flipping himself over. Taken with surprise, Mario's eyes awoke and he found himself upright in bed. Hoping to clear his head, Mario discussed the strange dream with Luigi, Kinopio and Princess Peach. They then set out for a picnic at a nearby mountain. Arriving at their destination, they saw a small cave within viewing distance. Entering the cave, they're astonished by the sight of a continuous, rising staircase, just like in Mario's dream. Everyone climbs up to the top level, where the same door as in Mario's dream sits. With some caution, they open the door and take a look...once again to their surprise, like in Mario's dream, a world expanded before their eyes.

(Page 6)

*Jumping Power
The four characters have a differing amount of jumping power between them. Here are the differences in their attributes.

Mario
His jumping power is about average in most situations. However, when holding an item, the height of his jumps decreases a bit.

Luigi
Able to jump the highest, fluttering for a distance, his jumps are not always precise. When holding an item, his power decreases more than Mario's.

(Page 7)

Kinopio
His jumping power is the lowest. However, when holding an item, the height of his jump and running speed does not change.
*In America, Kinopio is named Toad.

Princess Peach
Her jumping power is ranked third. If the A button is continuously held, she can float through the air for about 1.5 seconds. When holding an item, her jumping power decreases quite a bit.

Pages 8, 9

*Running
Everyone runs at the same speed, however when something is being carried, the character speed is in the order of Kinopio>Mario>Luigi>Princess Peach.

*Plucking, lifting up
When plucking an item or lifting up mushroom blocks, the speed is in the order of Kinopio>Mario>Luigi>Princess Peach.

Pages 10, 11
(Page 10)
*The game starts with 3 lives
The life gauge begins with 2 hits. If it turns completely white, the player is dead. The gauge can be increased to a maximum of 4 hits. If the amount of players reaches 0 due to deaths, the game is over.

*Deaths due to falling
Along the stages, there are holes and waterfalls. If you accidently fall in, you'll die. Do watch out for missteps and mistakes from jumping.

*When your life gauge is at 1, your body becomes small. Be careful!
